Ke$ha Says EMA Is 'The First Thing I've Ever Won'
'Apparently people started liking me,' 'Tik Tok' singer says of Best New Act win.
MADRID — By the time you read this, you'll probably already know that Ke$ha had herself a pretty big night at the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards, taking home the award for Best New Act and going under the blacklight for a performance of "Tik Tok."
But what you might not be aware of is how much the EMA win actually meant to her. After all, before she took home that wobbly EMA trophy, it had been a long, long time since she'd won anything.
"[This is] the first thing I've ever won!" she told MTV News moments after striding off the EMA stage. "Except for when I was in high school, and I won the award for 'Most likely to be a serial killer,' which I have not fulfilled yet — just wait for my breakdown."
We will, for sure. And because she was so giddy about winning, Ke$ha didn't actually remember her acceptance speech, which included a threat to the critics and her shouting about peeing her pants (which actually marked the second time she's said something to that effect). But she stands by both statements — sort of.
"I did say that onstage, didn't I?" she asked, laughing. "[Winning] is amazing, because I was under the assumption that everybody hated me for a long time. And then I stopped going on the Internet, and since then, about six months ago, apparently people started liking me, and then I got this award."
She did, indeed. But Ke$ha's win was only half of her huge night: After taking Best New Act, she tore through an eye-popping performance of "Tik Tok," which, in keeping with the theme of her EMA night, was also a highlight.
"That was fun as balls," she said, laughing. "And I got to jump on Spaniards, which was also a dream of mine, to jump on a multitude of Spaniards."
An edited, performance-heavy version of the 2010 EMA show will be broadcast Friday at 9 p.m. ET on MTV.
