They’re a fashion salvation for millions of women. Now leggings could do more than keep wobbly bits out of sight – by promising to make them vanish altogether.

A souped-up version of the wardrobe staple claims to combat cellulite and banish ‘cankles’ as you wear them.

Makers of the Proskins Slim leggings say the compression fabric works in a similar way to high-tech sportswear, giving legs a steady, firm pressure which they claim improves blood flow.

This helps stop fat cells from sticking to connective tissue in the thighs and bottom, a cause of cellulite, and fight fluid retention around the calves and ankles.

Caffeine, Vitamin e, aloe vera and retinol woven into the fabric smooths and plumps the skin, reducing the ‘orange peel’ effect, they add.

Independent tests by French firm Dermascan found wearers lost up to 2cm off their thighs and 63 per cent noticed less cellulite.

Two-thirds of women also felt their jeans were less tight after one month of daily wear.

The £50 leggings are proving a hit online and are best-sellers at Tesco and Next.

Celebrity fans include former X Factor judge Dannii Minogue, who told her 690,000 followers on Twitter: ‘My Style Tip. Try Proskins Caffeine-infused compressionwear for reducing exercise when you can’t exercise. Perfect for long flights.’

Neil French, managing director of Proskins, said: ‘We make a lot of sportswear for athletes and we realised that the same compression fabric which reduces lactic acid in the legs could also tackle cellulite and swollen ankles.

‘One of the ways the compression fabric works is to force fluid away from the ankles and redirect it towards the bladder.

‘This means customers do find they need the toilet a bit more in the first week or so, but the result is more shapely legs and redefined ankles and calves.’

The leggings require some dedication to the cause, however -- Proskins recommends that users wear them eight hours a day for 28 days to achieve maximum results.

Full-time wear should not mean more washing though, according to Mr French.

‘There is silver in the fabric which means it does not need to be washed as often as normal leggings because it is anti-bacterial and kills odours’ he said.

‘It is also temperature regulated so people should be able to comfortably wear them under their jeans.’

Proskins Slim Ladies capri leggings cost £45, or £50 for the full-length pair.
