Who says the Oscars are too old? But not all members of the esteemed Motion Picture Academy are on board with some of the 178 newbies invited to join the group.

The Academy of motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 178 new members into the fold, and Academy president Tom Sherak says they represent "the best filmakers working in the industry today." But the Academy can be a big, dysfunctional family, and not all its members approved.
One questioned the inclusion of CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves since his only connection to film is the relatively new CBS Films unit. "Too many people on that board work in television, and they were afraid it would get back to him if they said no," the member gripes.
A number of the actors also raised eyebrows. "John Corbett is the most questionable one," says a member. "Doesn't he do voice-overs for Applebee's?" Another a similar complaint but a different list. "Tea Leoni, David Duchovny -- these are people not working in film. And Beyonce? She's a fine entertainer, but she moonlights as an actress."
Some felt that in seeking out younger members, the Academy was in too big a hurry, citing Rooney Mara. "I could see her getting in maybe after The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," says one, "but she was in The Social Network for something like eight minutes." Even so, this member says the Academy could use some fresh faces: "If they are under the age of 70 -- welcome."

'True Blood': 14 Things You Should Know About Season 4

Anna Paquin

"True Blood"
The whole True Blood menagerie of humans, supernaturals and everything in between is finally returning on Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO.
And in honor of their impending arrival, The Hollywood Reporter has compiled a massive list of character reveals, story twists, and other helpful information to get you totally prepped for what you’re about to see.
So, roll up your sleeves and dig in, because we have 14 things you should know about True Blood’s fourth season:
Warning: Spoilers!
1. It's a crooked path to Fairyland, but Sookie's taking it.For those of you who saw the first 8 minutes HBO released from the premiere, you know that Sookie (Anna Paquin) will probably have some issues about being a fairy. Don’t despair, the microwave fingers aren’t going anywhere. “Now, she realizes she has some fairy blood in her,” producerAlexander Woo says. “She doesn’t know what that means yet, but she has to come to grips with it and take advantage of what that power could be to her. So, I think this year Sookie is going to grow a little more comfortable with what she is.”
2. Bill turns into a PR man for vampires. After Russell Edginton (Denis O’Hare) sets the vampire movement back a few thousand years, Bill is tasked with doing damage control. “Bill ends up in this situation that he wouldn’t necessarily have chosen but he gets pushed into it,” Stephen Moyersays. “Ultimately he’s trying to not only rebuild what vampires are to the greater outside community but rebuild what he represents to Sookie."

3. This is Alexander Skarsgard’s year. It has already been revealed that Eric will be struck with amnesia this season and what that does is feature Skarsgard’s acting like this show has never done before. “The huge challenge is he has to portray someone who has an almost completely different personality, yet is at the roots still the same character and what he’s done with it,” Woo says.
“Seeing how Alex was able to almost instantaneously turn into a different Eric, yet one that was still rooted in the same character at heart is really extraordinary. I think it will be great, great fun for everyone to watch.”
4. Alcide and Bill have something in common besides Sookie. While we’ve been used to seeing Alcide (Joe Manganiello) and Bill in opposition of each other by nature of who they are and for the affections of Sookie, we’ll learn this season that they may be more similar than we thought. “Alcide is in many ways like Bill in that he is reluctant to participate too much in the world and the politics,” Woo explains. “This is at least the Bill we knew at the beginning of the series was trying to mainstream and live among people and Alcide is very much the same. He's a bit of a ‘lone wolf.’ ”
5. Fairies, vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters, Brujos and what? “There’s a new twist on shapeshifters,” showrunner Alan Ball says. “There are disembodied spirits -- ghosts if you will. We get more into the Brujo tradition: the demonic black magic that Jesus may have inherited from his grandfather.” And as if Bon Temps doesn’t have enough to worry about, Arlene will encounter a new force. “She will be facing something that the show hasn’t even seen before,” Carrie Preston teases. “It is something new and you can put two and two together if you want.”
6. Debbie Pelt has a softer side. After Season 3’s big throw-down with Sookie, Debbie is still alive and at-large and we’ll see another side to her. “Debbie was really, really bad last season to everybody but in every bad girl, there’s a soft spot,” Brit Morgan says. “There’s a wound behind every bad girl -- maybe a little bit of emptiness. Why else would she be doing that vampire blood?! To fill the hole, man!” But that soft side doesn’t mean she’s letting Alcide off the hook. “She’ll be a thorn in Alcide’s side for a while,” Manganiello adds.
7. Terry becomes Mr. Mom to Arlene’s creepy baby. “The last time we saw Arlene she was definitely worried and concerned that the sins of the father of the child are growing and being vested upon the child inside of her,” Preston says. “Those fears don’t go away.” While the burden of the baby’s temperament becomes a heavy burden for Arlene, she and Terry (Todd Lowe) are as cool as can be. “For Arlene, she’s really lucky that she’s found a man who will put up with her histrionics, neuroses and will stand by her side, so she feels lucky.”
8. The Bellefleur family reunion may not be a fun one. When Andy’s sister Portia (Courtney Ford) returns to town, Andy doesn’t exactly roll out the welcome wagon. “[Their reunion] is awkward and uncomfortable because my sister got the looks and the brains,” Chris Bauer says. “Our grandmother loves her and dotes on her. The chip on Andy’s shoulder is so high it bumps into the moon. She’s no exception. She’s part of the problem as far as Andy is concerned.”

9. Jessica really wants things to work with Hoyt despite behavior that isn’t always in line with that desire. “She’ll definitely explore her vampire side, which Hoyt isn’t that comfortable with,” Deborah Ann Woll says. Adds Jim Parrack: “If you’ve ever been in a relationship, it’s a test.”
10. Shapeshifters 101. Luna winds up being a teacher both professionally and personally and teaches Sam a thing or two about the “full range and capabilities of shapeshifters,” Janina Gavankasays. Could that lead to a teacher-student relationship? “I think that people who are rooting for Sam will really be happy Luna is around because she sees how good of a guy he is and she honors that,” Gavanka says. Adds Sam Trammell: “You get to see the mythology of shapeshifters and the specific problem being a shapeshifter.”
11. Nan has her hands full. With Eric’s amnesia, Bill handling PR and a coven of witches in town, Nan is caught in the middle. “I’ve got the AVL and the Authority yelling at me,” Jessica Tuck says. “Then I’ve got all these vampires that I’ve got to deal with and I’m the middle man that everybody seems to hate. But really, I’m just doing my job.”
12. Lafayette trusts Jesus. A lot. With Lafayette still freaked out by Jesus’ (Kevin Alejandro) Brujo roots, he’s hesitant to explore whatever abilities he may have, but begrudgingly takes one for the team. “Lafayette doesn’t completely come around [to exploring his abilities] but Jesus asks him to do it and he trusts Jesus,” Nelsan Ellis says. “I don’t know if that works out for the two of them, but we’ll see.”
13. Jason turns into a man. “This is the season of the biggest growth for Jason,” Ryan Kwantensays. “He started very low on the evolutionary totem pole, so he could only go up. This is a real season of where the young boy turns into a man.”
14. Get ready to go back in time. There are going to be a lot more chances for fans to see our fave vamps as they were earlier in their “lives.” If you can imagine that Pam (Kristin Bauer) is considered young at about 100 years old, then you get a sense of just how many story possibilities there are for flashbacks. “All of our vampires have such a long back story that at some point, I think, we’ll get to everyone,” Woo says.
“One thing we’ve realized when we had Godric who was really ‘alive’ on the show for maybe three episodes,” Woo continues. “Was there were so many opportunities because he had such a long life with Eric and still a long life in general as a vampire that we could always go back to it. So, one of the opportunities that we have with our vampires that we could always go somewhere in their past to dig into something that informs what’s going on with them now.”

Film stars Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz have tied the knot, Craig's publicist has confirmed.
Robin Baum of Slate PR, which represents the James Bond actor, said the pair had got married, but did not offer any details.
The British couple will play husband and wife in the movie Dream House.
According to reports, they tied the knot last Wednesday in New York, with only Craig's teenage daughter, Ella, Weisz's five-year-old son, Henry, and two family friends as guests.
Craig, 43, rose to international stardom in 2006 when he became the sixth actor to play Bond in the movie franchise.
He will take on the role of the suave secret agent for the third time in the 23rd movie, to be released in October next year.
His other film credits include Elizabeth, Layer Cake and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which comes out in the UK later this year.
Weisz, 41, won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in the 2005 film The Constant Gardener. Her other films include The Mummy and About a Boy.

Profile: Christopher Shale Friend and ally of David Cameron became chairman of West Oxfordshire Conservative Association after successful business career

Christopher Shale was found dead at the Glastonbury festivalChristopher Shale: David Cameron described him as 'a close and valued friend'.
Christopher Shale, an Oxfordshire businessman who became a prominent organiser in David Cameron's West Oxfordshire constituency, won the prime minister's trust and helped establish key party fundraising initiatives.
Shale, a married father who would have been 57 in August, only recently became chairman of the West Oxfordshire Conservative Association after a business career including the ownership of a group purchasing consultancy called Oxford Resources Ltd as well as property interests.
Described by one senior Conservative politician who knew him as "a man in a permanently good mood", Shale became a regular at national Conservative events and is said to have helped establish the party patrons club, a scheme to raise money for the Tories.
Previously, he was the chief executive of SGL Communications and was also a director of the Centre for Policy Studies between 2001 and 2005 and a sponsor of the eurosceptic thinktank OpenEurope.
On Sunday, Cameron described Shale as "a big rock in my life" and "a close and valued friend". He was among the close allies who joined the PM after midnight on polling day in 2010 at the New Inn in Witney.
"He was a successful and well-connected businessman who got involved in politics because he liked David," one senior Conservative politician said.
"He was a sophisticated man and a local organiser, but you would see him at national events because he was so well-connected."
Shale lived in Over Worton, in the rolling Oxfordshire countryside around Chipping Norton which has become a weekend powerbase for theConservatives and their media allies.
His family home is six miles from the Camerons' constituency cottage and a short drive from the homes of Rebekah Brooks, the chief executive of News International, Elizabeth Murdoch, a board director of News Corp, and Steve Hilton, Cameron's director of strategy in Downing Street.
"He was a very positive and enthusiastic man, full of ideas," Mike Howes, the president of the Chipping Norton branch of the association, said.
"He was only just appointed as chairman about six months ago and we were looking forward to stability. He was keen on promoting membership and being positive and he was very supportive of David [Cameron], which is what we all want."
Shale had been involved in a Conservative party project to help people in Umubano, Rwanda, and made his fifth visit there this year.
"I have hundreds of happy moments from Rwanda," he wrote on the project's website. "It has always been such a mix of people, all ages and talents, learning from and laughing with our Rwandan partners – some of the most inspirational people I have ever met. I'd urge people to do whatever necessary to raise the money to visit Umubano."
"We are all very, very sad," Marion Dowding, Shale's deputy at the West Oxfordshire Conservative Association, said. "He was a lovely guy."

Battlefield 3 Has A New Spawn Mechanic

Battlefield 3 Has A New Spawn Mechanic
For those of you who have Played Battlefield Bad Company 2, you may have become accustomed to the ability to spawn on any of your squadmates upon your untimely demise. Well Battlefield 3 is tweaking that mechanic in order to prevent spawn camping objectives and opposing bases. The new mechanic was described by senior gameplay designer Alan Kertz who reported it as a response on Twitter. The tweet said:
Squad Leaders can span on any squadmate, squad members can only spawn on the Leader.Keeps pace up without tons o spawns.
I like this concept of spawning more that the current one for multiple reasons. The first reason is that it makes more sense to only be able to spawn on the person with authority rather than everyone running wild as soon as your feet touch the dirt on a squadmate. It also gives you a reason to work as a team in order to keep the squad leader safe for a spawn point closer to your enemies objective. The second reason is that this can reduce the amount of spawn camping that is seen on the battlefield. What do you guys think? Is this a change for the better or does it make things worse? Feel free to comment below.

Audi R8 raise £620k for Elton John

Audi R8 raise £620k for Elton John
Two special Audi R8 Spydersupercars helped raise £620,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation last night.
A star-studded auction at Sir Elton’s White Tie & Tiara Ball raised the hefty sum, which was boosted at the last minute thanks to Audi’s generosity.
Initially, just one ‘chrome finish’ Audi R8 Spyder was due to go under the hammer: this quickly sold for £250,000.
However, interest was so strong, the firm agreed to donate a second Audi R8 for auction. This car actually sold twice, too, as the initial bidder submitted it a second time for auction.
This helped boost the total sum to the headline £620k figure, which will go towards providing thousands of men, women and children across 15 countries with life-saving medication and other support.
“We are absolutely delighted to have been instrumental in raising such a magnificent sum for Sir Elton’s charity,” said Jeremy Hicks, director of Audi UK.
“We couldn’t, of course, have done so without the incredible generosity of Sir Elton’s guests, to whom we owe an enormous vote of thanks.”

Nokia Sea Ray Leaked

After Nokia's recent statement that the company would follow Apple's product secrecy methods for its WP7 devices, we were made to believe that the company would actually do what it stated. But CEO of Nokia Mr Stephen Elop seems to be having a hard time comprehending that, because he has unofficially unveiled the device at an event. The intention was to show the people present, what it looks like. Elop humbly asked the audience to not record or not take pictures, to avoid spreading of the same in the blogosphere or media.

Nokia Sea Ray Leaked

As it turns out, unknown to Elop, one person was recording the whole event, even as he went forward with the unveiling. The new Nokia Windows Phone 7 handset, known as the Sea Ray for now, bears a striking resemblance to the NokiaN9. Elop explained and pointed out at the hardware camera button at the right hand side of the device, which is not present on the N9, before finally switching on the device. This handset was seen running on Windows Phone 7.5 a.k.aMango. The official announcement is still a few months away, but that won't matter to people now, since the device has already been made public, and has been published all over the internet. The latter part of the video shows the features and functions of Windows Phone Mango on the Sea Ray.

The Sea Ray will feature an 8 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics, which is the same as in the N9. Other specs could include a 1 GHz processor (a 1 GHz processor is a must for all WP7 devices) and 512 MB RAM. The back looks similar to the N9 apart from the positioning of the dual LED flash. Apart from these minor differences, the handset has a similar structure to the N9.

Some reports on the web have suggested that this was a staged leak to gain popularity and create hype. This does make sense since there's no loss of focus in the video capture, and the person recording the video doesn't seem to be hiding while recording the video. Nokia could have a couple of more WP7 handsets lined up, but for now it seems like this is going to be the first ever Nokia WP7 handset. Check out a few more leaked photos of the Sea Ray below:

In teamwork, one bad apple really does make a difference

WHEN it comes to the workplace, a team is only as efficient as its laziest member.
This is the conclusion a PhD student, Benjamin Walker, came to after seconding 158 undergraduates, sorting them into teams and assigning them a task.
Presenting his findings at last week's ninth Industrial and Organisational Psychology Conference in Brisbane, Mr Walker, from the University of NSW's Australian school of business, said it put proof to the one bad apple theory. The findings were surprising, however, because it was previously assumed that in a workplace scenario, a team worked to the capacity of its average member.
Each student was psychologically tested for their level of conscientiousness before being placed in one of 33 teams. Each team had a member who was what the researchers called motivation-challenged - and what the rest of the population might call bone lazy. The students in each team were told they would all receive the same mark, depending on how well they completed the problem-based case study they were assigned.
The study found that a single lazy person dragged the team down, reducing its satisfaction and performance overall.
The participants were also evaluated for impulsiveness, to see whether this trait affected performance, but it found the overall group mentality over-rode the reckless element.
But the team could not compensate for its laziest link. "These findings show the person who contributes the least has a huge impact,'' Mr Walker said. ''Even if on average the rest of the team is pulling their weight, they won't be able to compensate for that member and they won't be happy about it."
Mr Walker feels vindicated with his research, which was inspired by his own undergraduate years. Working in a team with one student who consistently skipped classes and spent his nights partying, the reprobate nevertheless received a high distinction, thanks to the effort of the others. He then did everything in his powers to get placed within the same group for the next assignment.
While the research pinpointed the fact that it was the laziest contributor which led to the most feelings of resentment within the team and its ultimate failure or success, Mr Walker conceded he did not separately collate reactions of the perceived offenders. Presumably they were satisfied with the exercise.

Class Distinctions

We have a report in The Independent on Sunday of a survey of the British working class carried out by BritainThinks, Deborah Mattinson’s research company.
It is the second phase of the study that we reported, in the newspaper and on this blog, in March. Then, we looked at the attitudes of the newly-expanded middle class; this time we are looking at the 24% who describe themselves as working class.
loo 300x268 Class DistinctionsThere was a lot of rich information in the BritainThinks opinion survey carried out for both studies, some of which we used for the graphics in The Independent on Sunday today, but I thought you might be interested to see more of the data.
Most eye-catching were BritainThinks’s findings about which of pairs of words people use most often, splitting the responses between those who describe themselves as working class (WC) and middle class (MC):
Lavatory WC 4% MC 11% Toilet WC 96% MC 89%

Pudding WC 58% MC 49% Dessert WC 42% MC 51%
Sofa WC 53% MC 59% Settee WC 47% MC 41%
In the contest between serviette and napkin there was no significant difference between the classes, as the nation split down the middle.
Working class and middle class differ most on:
Which social class will your children be? Working class WC 58% MC 3%
I often have conversations with friends about shows like the X-Factor or Britain’s Got Talent WC 51% MC 29%
I don’t know who to trust these days WC 58% MC 42%
I often feel lonely WC 37% MC 22%
Which hobbies and activities do you do most in your spare time? Listening to music WC 17% MC 10%
Working class people are more likely to watch:
X-Factor WC 44% MC 29%
Britain’s Got Talent WC 36% MC 22%
EastEnders WC 34% MC 21%
Coronation Street WC 34% MC 24%

Brands that working-class people claim as their own:
EasyJet WC 52%
eBay WC41%
Pizza Express WC 36%
Compare the Market WC 28%
Sainsbury’s WC 13%
BritainThinks commissioned PDS to conduct an online survey of 2,000 GB adults. Respondents were sampled across the country between 11 & 14 December 2010 and quotas were set to ensure that the sample was representative of all GB adults.

Offender photos 'to be added to crime maps'

The Home Office is considering adding photographs of offenders and more details about their offences to online crime maps.
The government, confirming details in the the Sunday Times by the police minister, said the plan was to increase transparency and accountability.
It cited what it called a "trailblazing project" in West Yorkshire which identifies criminals.
Campaign group Liberty said local papers already published such details.
Policing and Criminal Justice Minister Nick Herbert said: "We want to build on the success of the police.uk crime mapping website by adding more information about how offences are actually dealt with in the criminal justice system.
"A trailblazing project is being run by West Yorkshire police to map justice outcomes.
"We are determined to increase transparency and enable the public to hold the justice system to account."
The online crime maps for England and Wales were launched in February, and allow users to see which offences have been reported in their local streets by entering a postcode or street name.
'Macho posturing'
The West Yorkshire crime maps have been going since 2005. By inputting their address, residents can see the location of any alleged offences, ranging from murder to litter dropping. It is updated monthly.
Shami Chakrabarti, from Liberty, dismissed the Home Office plan as "macho piece of posturing".
"Excuse me but haven't local newspapers being doing this for years?"
She told BBC One's The Andrew Marr Show that it was interesting that in "one of the worst recessions this country has ever faced, everybody - opposition and government - [is] posturing on law and order, often with relatively minor tweaks."
Information on the crime map website is broken down into six categories - burglary, robbery, vehicle crime, violence, other crime and anti-social behaviour. Sex crimes have been included in the "other" category, along with crimes such as theft and shoplifting, to help prevent victims from being identified.

Emma Watson fears her wealth will put off men

Emma Watson fears that she has become so rich from the Harry Potter franchise that her wealth is putting off potential boyfriends.

The 20 year-old, who is now a student at Brown University, Rhode Island, has confessed she is wary of intimidating her contemporaries.
Speaking to Weekend magazine she said: "I hope it doesn't complicate relationships for me. I think it can make guys quite uncomfortable. I do have to be sensitive."
The actress, who has finished filming the final Harry Potter installment, said she is conscious of not standing out amongst her peers by "trottng around college" with expensive accessories such as a "£1,000 handbag".
She admitted that her riches, thought to be in the region of £22million according to the Sunday Times Rich List, "can make guys quite uncomfortable".
Miss Watson has previously described herself as a romantic who wants "to be in love".
Earlier this month she admitted that she has been in love once before but wouldn't name the man because "it wouldn't be fair to any others".
When asked what type of men she found attractive she said "quick wit, good conversation and a great sense of humour" were most important.
She also added: "I want a man to like me for me - I want him to be authentic."
Her move to the United States is reported to have helped end her two-year relationship with Jay Barrymore, a financier. Since then she has been linked to Spanish musician Rafael Cebrian.
